*Status:*

We are in Emergency Stabilization mode now. We are attacking worse first.
We face the challenges of keeping the momentum of our regular activities
increasing and meeting the challenges of the additional grounds and
buildings.
Our next steps are to secure the remaining broken or missing doors,
repair the three roof leaks that we suspect can be causing structural
damage and begin repainting the metal DDUs to protect them from further
rust damage. Anyone want to help?

This past week was super busy. Just some of the things I know of or
can recall at this hour. Please email the items I forget, It is
important to report our progress.

*During the week... and weekend...*

-Nels W. and Pete R. went above - their normal above and beyond. They
mowed and "weed wacked" the entire main site, including the new field.
-Nels and Pete also removed the fence the BRAC persons put by 9010D and
9092. They removed the barbed wire and pulled the posts out of the
ground with our fork lift.
- Dan J. has been working on improving the landscape in this area.
-Bob W. mowed the Diana Site
- We made some progress at the Diana Site to prepare for the TIROS 50th
Anniversary
--We contracted with a firm to repaint the TIROS Dish (TLM-18 - Serial
#001). They will start May 26th - weather permitting.
--Architect Paul M. visited the TIROS Ground Control Center building to
gather info. to create the drawing for a new wheelchair & family
restroom in 9162
--We continued repairing problems with the original light fixtures as
seen in the 1960s National Geographic and NASA photos of the control room.
- We re-roofed 9012, the first 'H' building boiler house. This makes
another building that will not leak. Our total for the month is 9 - yes
nine buildings re-roofed since the transfer. We have re-roofed 17
buildings (seventeen) so far and four minor structures.
-We have estimates to re-roof the 'H' buildings to help us in the
preparation of a grant or a public outreach to save these historic
structures.
- The WW2 Firehouse (9031), the 60' by 60' WW2 Guard Headquarters (9029)
and the boiler building between them (9030) now have new leaders and
gutters.
- Dan J. has the Computer eduction center ready for business on Sundays
- We completed removing the years of vines and trees growing from the
balance of the buildings. We will continue the prime coat of paint is
the weather is good this weekend.
-Nels W. filled five trailer loads of brush to the large pile. Thanks
to Wall public works for removing the massive pile and also emptying our
full dumpster.
-We met with the Non-Profit volunteer organization group
Blossom-International. We hope they will become an InfoAge Partner
Organization
- Our new website home page is live. Thanks to John Brown and Steve G.
for a massive amount of work. Check it out. Please note you can donate
via PayPal to our cause. Please give it a test. We will take any donation.
-Bob G. has made more progress with the Camp Evans history book. He is
working on the MET systems Chapter.
-Mike and Barb R. are working on the Wall of Honor arrangements. This
takes lots of time and effort to pull of an event like this.
-The newsletter was printed and ready for labels....guess what we will
be doing at the meeting.
-Someone tripped the fridge breaker in 9002, then left. The results
were not good. Dave Snellman cleaned the rotten food out of the 9002
fridge. Having cleaned a 'donated' fridge with rotted food I know Dave
suffered nausea and urges to - well you know.
a big thanks to Dave.

*This week events:*
-Mike G. organized a "Myth Busters' style telephone book pull with the
Neptune ROTC. Wall Twp. Public Works truck and police vs Neptune Public
Works truck and police. News Channel 12 covered the event that night on
the news.
it was a fun and educational event. Steve G. was on hand to give tours
to the two bus loads of students.
-Harry K's. Internet tutorial went fine. Thank you for all attending
including Steve M. and Larry T. of the BOT.
-Ray C. and Steve G. represented InfoAge at the Washington, DC ceremony
to recognize the first group of Preserve America Stewards. Both
gentlemen did a great job pushing our cause with the members of the
Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.
-On Friday evening members of the New Jersey Museum of Transportation
and the Garden State Central met in the hotel
-Also on Friday evening we held a public meeting for any public input to
our Community Block Development Grant. Thank you to Larry T. for doing

*** Many persons are working to help save Camp Evans and give it a
future in education and as a place to honor those who served. Thank you
to all.

*Reasons to tell persons why to donate (via check or PayPal) to our
effort NOW: *

2) Honors WWII Signal Corps and Honor Front veterans
3) Helps education by inspiring kids to learn science
4) Furthers the development of a NJ Shore tourist destination.

No InfoAge Meeting on Wednesday May 13

Hello All,

No Meeting Wednesday night. A news update update will be sent later.

*Invitation to National Event Honoring Preserve America Communities and
Stewards*

*/Mr. Ronald D. Anzalone/*
Director, Office of Preservation Initiatives Advisory Council on Historic Preservation has sent us an invitation to a reception and Preserve America recognition event honoring selected Preserve America Communities and Stewards, including the InfoAge Science-History Center - reservation of Camp Evans. Ray Chase and Steve Goulart are representing InfoAge in Washington DC
tomorrow. The reception will be held on the evening of Wednesday, May 13th in Washington, D.C.

President Barack Obama signed the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 on March 30, which included authorization for Preserve America and Save America's Treasures grants.
In addition to the grants, the law codifies the designation of Preserve America Communities as one of the entities eligible to apply for grants.

The details of the grant are at:
http://www.achp.gov/docs/Omnibus_Bill_090330.pdf Please review it. We need to put together a group to explore the possibilities with this $50 Million dollars. Wall is NJ's first Preserve America Community and InfoAge is amount the first eleven Preserve America Stewards. Camp Evans is an official Save America's Treasures Project.
***Steve Goulart has pointed out every state has received grants under these programs except NJ.
***We submitted two grants, but I made the mistake of proposing work in anticipation of the transfer.
***As of March 24th at 4PM with the completion of the transfer we are positioned to go for the money we need to preserve this site for the benefit of the future.

Again, please review the link to help us prepare a winning grant.

Thank you,
Fred

InfoAge Meeting, Wednesday May 6

Hello All,

We will have our regular meeting, on Wednesday, May 6th at 6:45PM. I
extend a warm welcome to you to join in the meeting tomorrow.
From the events below you will see our center is growing as a tourist
attraction, a place for education, a living memorial and a place of
historic preservation.

Future events:
May 9th - Sunday - 5:30PM InfoAge helps Wall Kiwanis at the Wall Stadium
50/50 raffle. Please let me know if you can help. This is fun
especially if you like auto racing.
The club has supported InfoAge for years. Until we received gifts
from large multi-national corporations the Wall Kiwanis was our best
support when few others had faith in us.

June 6th - Wall of Honor event - Details coming soon.

This past week was action packed.

On April 29th - We will hosted the Monmouth/Ocean counties PTA
presidents meeting in our hotel. They liked the place and it is up to
us the involve them more fully in InfoAge to help their kids and schools.

On May 2nd - Radio Auction - From an email from Ray Chase and a response
from NJARC President Richard Lee

A big thanks to all you who helped make the May 2nd InfoAge auction a success, too many to mention by name. Those who helped pick up the stuff and schlep it around at infoAge, (especially up the ramp from the hotel basement, it seemed easy taking it down, not so easy coming up, we won't make that mistake again, all storage henceforth will be ground level). Those who set up and ran the food concession; who repaired ceiling lights at the eleventh hour; those who did an accurate and speedy job of clerking; registration and cashiering; all those who showed up bright and early Saturday to be runners and parking lot attendants; and not to forget those who brought money and hauled everything away. We also need to especially thank Richard & John Estes who came from Ohio to Auctioneer. Also our InfoAge friends who provided all kinds of assistance in big and small ways. Just under 400 lots were sold in four hours and twenty minutes. The gross sales totaled just over $10,000, WOW!
It will take a few days to crunch all the numbers to figure out the distribution of the proceeds. Hope everybody had at least a little fun and got some goodies to take home.
Ray

Fellow enthusiasts, I want to echo the thanks Ray Chase has expressed to all NJARC volunteer members participating in this past Saturday's Mega auction at InFoAge.
BUT, he left out the most significant volunteer.....Himself! Without Rays' foresight, this auction would have never come together. All those "treasures" we took home Saturday, would still be stashed in all corners of InFo Age. Most of us have no Idea, the amount of time and planning it took, and the invitation of a professional auctioneer....Brilliant! Our hats off to Ray Chase! Regards, Richard Lee President NJARC

May I add my thanks to Ray, the entire NJARC, Richard and John Estes, and Wall Township for issuing the auction permit. I loved seeing the excess radios/etc going into the hands of people who will care for them rather them sitting in our storage. We can only display so much.

On May 2nd - Ship Wreck Symposium - An email from Dan Leib:

All:

First, let me thank everyone for making this year's symposium a success!
We received very little criticism and loads of compliments. The museum
received high praises. We profited only a little under what I'd hoped,
but we made enough to keep going for another year. While I heard only
a few of folks say they thought the wreck montage was a little long, I
heard as many say they loved it. Any more people in the room and the
sight lines would have been bad. Those were the only two criticisms I
heard - and I polled a lot of folks. Everyone said the second half was
even more interesting than the first - and they liked both halves. They
all liked the host, the artwork, the ROVs, and all of the speakers. Good
show!

Tina, you did a great job hosting. You made it your own. Well done!
Harry, you got a lot of compliments. Folks liked the talk very much.
Steve and Maureen, the last was the best. The women of NE diving was a hit!
Several already volunteered to help with next year's event. Some came up
to me and said they liked the event very much and were already looking
forward to next year's symposium. We are consistent!
Whether you helped a little or a lot, you all did a great job and you
have my eternal gratitude.

Thank you,
Dan

Dad and the NJHDA - Great job - you made us proud.

The May 2nd & - May 3rdWeekend in Old Monmouth -

This event was bigger and better than last year. We enjoyed over double
the attendance over last year.
We also enjoyed a visit by Mr. Randall Gabrielan, Executive Director and
Ms. Ellen Terry, Commissioner of the Monmouth County Historical
Commission.
Thanks to this event we expect more persons to join as members.

The May 3rd - NJ Hall of Fame Installs Marconi - Thanks to Linda P. and
Don Jay Smith of the New Jersey Hall of Fame I was asked to represent
our hero G. Marconi at the gala event.
Bernie R. provided photos and information on Marconi for the
introduction video. Bernie and Dot also at the event.
The Hall of Fame mentioned InfoAge in the event program and had a photo
of the NJARC Radio Technology museum in the Marconi Video.
I did my best to represent us in a three minute talk on Monconi.
Backstage I reminded the Governor that as soon as the NPS elevates Camp
Evans to National Historic Landmark Status we will provide him the
information to make the public announcement.
Many others persons, for example Bon Jovi, Southside Johnny, Bill
Bradley, Yogi Berra, Mayor Dinkins, Avery Brooks, Buzz Aldrin and Bruce
Springsteen's Mom have our InfoAge bookmark.
BTW, a number of persons have told me Bruce Springsteen's Dad worked at
Camp Evans, in the REMBAS program. His Mom says he worked at Earle
Naval Weapons Depot. Case closed.

From our sister station in Chatham, Ma.
FRED CARL FROM MARCONI STATION IN BELMAR, NJ PRESENTS REPLICA OF
CHATHAM'S MISSING 1914 PLAQUE
Marconi Station in Belmar, NJ sends replica of 1914 Plaque to replace
Chatham Marconi's missing plaque.
Chuck Bartlett, CMMC board president, and Len Sussman, Chatham
Selectman, accept the plaque replica from Fred Carl, InfoAge, on April
15, 2009.
For
the whole story.

Click on the link to see the photo of our Township Committee with the
plaque, Bob Judge with his plaque and the presentation at Chatham.

We are in Emergency Stabilization mode now. We are attacking worse first.
We are making progress. I believe we have eliminated the major safety
hazards
We face the challenges of keeping the momentum of our regular activities
increasing and meeting the challenges of the additional grounds and
buildings.

*During the week... and weekend...*

---Nels W. and Pete R. went above - their normal above and beyond.
They mowed and "weed wacked" all around the hotel and 9032 so visitors
to the auction, shipwreck symposium and weekend at old Monmouth would be
impressed with the site - and they were.
----Then if that was not enough Nels cut nearly the entire new area
around the 'H' buildings and moved all sorts of stuff to improve the
look of the new area. Pete greeted visitors both Saturday and Sunday in
the Hotel.
- We discovered a hole in the boiler building (9033) roof. It it
repaired and the building re-roofed.
- We re-roofed the WW2 Firehouse (9031), the 60' by 60' WW2 Guard
Headquarters (9029) and the boiler building between them (9030). This
makes four more buildings that will not leak. Our total for the month
is 8 - yes eight buildings re-roofed.
- The Green Monster 7-UP soda machine has returned. It is in the Gate
one entrance building. Give it a dollar and you will get the soda of
your choice.
- Dan J. has been improving the Computer eduction center

***
In a review of the National Historic Landmark theme studies our site
could qualify for NHL status under three studies.
*Anyone want to start an application? *
The 'WW2 and the Homefront' study recommends Camp Evans as a potential NHL.
The Marconi Belmar Station could fit under the 'Travel and
Communications' theme in the wireless area.
The test of the regenerative circuit, Weagant's static elimination
advances and the Navy WWI communications center make the site NHL
significant.
Under the 'Man in Space' theme the TIROS ground control center, the
TLM-18 antenna, the mini-track calibration center, satellite tracking
starting with Sputnik, Explorer, Pioneer V and all US and Soviet
launches should qualify under the 'satellite tracking facilities chapter.
****Frank O. is uniquely suited to write this application and he will
attack it...

Infoage is an official Save America's Treasure's Project and we are a
Preserve America Steward organization. Wall Township is a Preserve
America Community
****

President Barack Obama signed the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of
2009 on March 30, which included authorization for Preserve America and
Save America's Treasures grants.

***** I will be asking someone to research these grants. I did one
grant for Save America in 2002 and one for Preserve America in 2005
(lots of paper) - but when they called about the status of the transfer
- all I could tell them way sorry the transfer has been delayed. As of
March 24th 4PM that all changed....and the bill was signed on the 30th...

Please remind me of things of have overlooked in this email. Please
excuse they items I have missed. No slight intended.
I get annoyed with myself as I ride up the Parkway to work and recall
many a good thing persons have done and I lost in my rush to get the
email out.
Another aspect of this is so many of you are doing so many things, I can
not keep up. In a way this is good.

This weekend (if it stops raining) we will really really really finish
the scratch coat on 9006. I purchased new concrete tools, so no need to
find the old ones. Steve has bags of sand mix somewhere...
Thank you,
