We will have a Wednesday meeting this week.

It's that time of year to look for all the smiling faces on the
children as they await a visit from Santa. What better way to start
the holiday season than to see the Holiday Train display at InfoAge
Science/History Center (Camp Evans).

Again the Garden State Central Model Railroad Club of
Asbury Park will set up lots of Operating Model Railroad displays at
Infoage. Many different layouts in all gauges including the N gauge
layout of the Pine Creek Railroad at Allaire State Park built by club
member, Steve Lang of Wall. Another club member,

Bob Ortley, of Wall, will have his layouts on display,
featuring an HO layout that goes from summer to winter.
The biggest attraction will be the large G gauge Garden style layout
with lots of member trains running at once. Some of the members
will try to run their live steam locomotives on the G gauge layout.

As an added bonus, Mike Golub, Neptune will have his unbelievable
lighted Christmas Village on display in the dining room of the famous
Marconi Hotel at Infoage.

Bring the whole family, enjoy all the operating model trains, from N
gauge to G gauge December 12,13,19 &20, Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m., InfoAge Science/History Center (Camp Evans), 2201 Marconi

*THE VERY MARCONI CHRISTMAS by Mike Golub*

On *Saturday December 19th 2009* Michael and Kathryn Golub will proudly host again the Second Annual *"Very Marconi* *Christmas" Gala at the InfoAge Science History Learning Center.* The yearly event will take place in the Banquet / Ball Room in the historic Marconi Hotel, locate at* 2201 Marconi Road, Wall Township NJ 07719.* Doors open at 6:30 PM. for tours and guest gathering activities.
This year's event will include many new miniature Christmas village scenes from around Monmouth County. Included in the displays of the evening are many large impressive exhibits from the *Garden State Central Model* *Railroad Club, Pine Creek Railroad Club* /[operating trains from N gauge to G gauge] /& several private collectors / exhibitors as well. In the past guests have been pleasantly surprised to find a group of collectors who build miniature circuses and tiny trains that fit into shoe boxes and attache cases.

This year Kathy and I will feature in our own display the recreations of the /*Shark River Waterfront* -/ complete with dredge site and several model sail boats and commercial fishing fleet/, *Camp Evans / InfoAge Learning Center*, *Wall Stadium/Speedway*/ complete with vintage-antique- classic car & motorcycle show,/ *Monmouth/Allaire Executive Airport*,/ complete with extensive collection of die cast planes and helicopters the/ *Asbury Boardwalk & Palace* *Amusements*, *Allaire State Park*,/ complete with hunting village and sleigh ride course,/ *Christmas in Key West with Beth and Lew*, a *Winter -Water Action Park*/ with three moving rinks and of course */Victorian Ocean Grove, Spring Lake/* along with the */Historic/* /*Red Bank Business District.*/

The display includes well over two hundred buildings all lighted up and over 1000 figurines, and die cast cars, trucks, trains, planes, and boats. The complete presentation of the display entails over 120 hours of work by several volunteers, close friends and family members. The events of the evening will include raffles, door prizes, live entertainment, refreshments and inter-active activities for adult guests of all ages. Most of the separate specialty museums, operated by the member organizations of InfoAge will also be open for guest to observe and experience. *Donation for admission is $25 per person and $45.00 per couple.*

**Things that went on this week** - please send me reminders of
accomplishments. So much stuff is going on I can not keep up. email
me!!! It is important to report our progress.

-Thanks to Jamie B. there is an excellent article in the Coast Star on
the Fire Truck transfer.
-Brandon made excellent progress on his eagle project. He and friends
spread nearly all the chips supplied by Dan's Tree Service.
-Thanks to the Haunted Hotel, a gift from the Somerville American
Legion, Manasquan VFW and our fund raising the roof repairs and new roof
for 9010C, 9010D and the central corridor to 9036D are done. Well
except for the gutter repairs. The contractor worked Saturday and
Sunday to beat the bad weather. The new roofs are being tested with
this storm right now. This will enable us to begin the interior repairs.
-The flashing repairs to the rear center hotel roof were done yesterday.
-Remember we have a tour on Wednesday the 16th by a bus from the Neptune
senior center. Some promise photos of Camp Evans from relatives.
-John T. has found the cottage sink drain line has rotten with age. He
is making repairs under Steve's supervision.
-The GSC is nearly done setting up the train layouts for the Holiday
Trains. I saw Jim J. and company lots of evenings.
-Our 3000 USA Non-Profit stamps have arrived.
-Steve G., Joe G. and John T. have done a more extensive exploration of
the buildings to be demolished. Doors and other items are being salvaged.
-Mike G. have exceeded every year so far with his holiday display and
Very Marconi Christmas. The display will enhance all the holiday events
and delight many a child.
-We have made more progress on the 9032 restrooms. The new toilets are
in the men's rooms and the urinals are hung. Next are the new ladies
room toilets. We have some painting touch ups and the hot water heater
will be wired by our electrician. Then we can have a ceremony to start
flushing.
-I still just need put those two repaired windows in the hotel back into
their frames. One got moved next to the window.
-The new group is interested in joining InfoAge to help establish their
museum on waves. They presented a proposal at our last meeting.
-We removed the dirt pile near 9059 to enable us to replace the 9059
side entrance concrete walk deeper.
-We also removed the dirt piles from when we improved the drainage on
the side on 9032A
-The day spent at the Fort Monmouth Archive getting more information on
the WW2 activities at Evans has resulted in lots of good material for
the NPS National Landmark Application. We now know the photograph of
the ceremony around special antenna shelter 9020 with Col DeWitt at the
microphone was a ceremony to present Capt. Vollium the Legion of Merit
award.
-We have been given a large portrait of G. Marconi and David Sarnoff.
-Ray Chase was quoted and InfoAge was mentioned in a Pearl Harbor Day
article in the Asbury Park Press
-Steve G. has met with an environmentalist to determine how to
reintroduce native species back to the bank of the Shark River near the
Marconi Operations building.
-We sorted and cleared the interiors of 9010D to enable us to begin the
interior work.
-We winterized the 9010 restrooms. It was a lot of unpleasant work
cleaning the caked excrement left during the BRAC times when contractors
used the waterless toilets.

At our last Wednesday meeting Jack Patterson was a new attendee. We
also had Scott, Evan, Al, Kyle, Joe G., Steve G., Dan L., Dave Sn., John
C,. Ray C., and Michele R.

This Sunday we had a good number of visitors. and over 20 volunteers on
site during the cold windy day. On hand were: Steve G., Joann B., John
T., Pete R., Sara, and Cecily F. Dan J., DJ, Kyle B., and Scott in the
computer deconstruction lab. Phil V. and Dave Sn.in the Hall of Fame.
Joe G. in the MARCH exhibit. Neil N. and Dan L in the NJHDA exhibit.
Bernie R. in the QCWA exhibit. Frank O. was with his Apollo computer
exhibit. Jim J. and many other GSC volunteers were at work on the
holiday trains. Plus Mike G. was setting up his massive display. Jerry
and Marsha S. were at work in the NBHF.

future in education and as a place to honor those who served. Thank you

It is important to report our progress.

-The Fire Truck transfer was an excellent event. Thanks to West
Belmar's FD Bill and George Newberry we now have a 1965 engine for our
last of a kind WW2 firehouse. The most fun for me was presenting Nels
with the CAMP EVANS - RADAR FIRE DEPARTMENT hat badge that Ray C.
'snipped' off ebay. From what I know Steve G., Dave Sn. and Mike G were
behind the securing of the actual Camp Evans FD badge for Nels to wear.
-The Coast Star has an article on the Blossom Family volunteer day and
Matt Sampson's eagle project.
-Brandon has begun his eagle project. He has cleared and enlarged the
river path started by the Landmark Volunteers two summers ago. This
path goes from the historic marconi balancing tower to the Laural gully
brook than along the brook to Marconi Road. Thanks to Dan's Tree
Service Brandon has four truck loads of wood chips to spread on the path.
-David B. is nearly done with his eagle project in the hotel.
-Steve Rosenfeld has been making excellent progress in the archives. He
has a great start on the references information for the newly acquired
Marconi Wireless Company of America drawings for our web finding aid.
-Thanks to the Haunted Hotel, a gift from the Somerville American Legion
and our fund raising the roof repairs and new roof for 9010C is 2/3rds
done and 9010D will begin soon. The rain!! This will complete all of
9010. This will enable us to begin the interior repairs.
-Thanks to Mike G. we make a presentation at the Neptune Senior
center. Fifteen will visit for a tour on Wednesday the 16th. Some
promise photos of Camp Evans from relatives.
-John T. has found the cottage sink drain line has rotten with age. He
is making repairs under Steve's supervision.
-The GSC has made excellent progress setting up the train layouts for
the Holiday Trains.
-We have 3000 USA Non-Profit stamps on order.
-Steve G., Joe G. and John T. have done a more extensive exploration of
the buildings to be demolished. Doors and other items are being salvaged.
-Mike G. have begun his preparation for his display and Very Marconi
Christmas. Possible we can give him a hand on Wednesday.
-Nels removed the old hotel lounge A/C compressor and added it to our
metal salvage pile.
-Henry S. completed the new rain/leaf cover for the hotel basement ramp.
-We dug the eight footing holes for the sentry post (9155) canopy. In
the For Monmouth Command historian's collection I scanned a 1956 repair
record on this building.
-We have made more progress on the 9032 restrooms. The men's room
partitions now have the dark army green. A stall door has been enlarged
for wheel chair access. It has the original look just larger. Next are
new toilets and those salvaged historic WW2 urinals will go back into
sanitary service.
-I still just need put those two repaired windows in the hotel back into
their frames. One got moved next to the window.
-A new group is interested in joining InfoAge to help establish their
museum on waves. They made a presentation at this past Wednesday's
meeting.
-Nels did more leaf removal. Nels and Pete repaired damaged fire doors
in 9011B. We also got the 9011B exterior door back on its track and
repaired the broken section of door rail.
-Dan L. has mode more progress repairing the damage to 9057.
-Dan L. has all the news articles he needs for this newsletter.
-As we backfilled the hole we dug to repair the two water valves, we
improved the drainage by the 9032 inside corner.
-We dug the area where we will replace the 9059 side entrance concrete
walk deeper.
-An email from the NPS let us know they will be starting the National
Landmark application this spring rather than the fall. We will be
contacted soon to provide the information we have on hand. I spent a
good part of the day at the Fort Monmouth Archive getting more
information on the WW2 activities at Evans.

-The 2009 haunted hotel review meeting went well. Nels and Judy have
nearly all the ghosts and ghouls packed away for next year.
-I forgot to note that OMARC donated $427 and Blossom $149 from their
Haunted Hotel food sales.
-Also Steve Rosenfeld has been busy in the archives. He will add the
references information for the newly acquired Marconi Wireless Company
of America drawings to our web finding aid.

-Nels was a wild man this weekend. He collected mountains of leaves.

the place. Thanks Michele's organization and to a story by Jamie B. of
the Coast Star the event was well attended. It appears Kyle B. and Joe
G. have joined Blossom too.
-Thank you to Blossom for doing such an excellent post event clean-up.
-Thanks to Mike G. we met with and gave a tour to representatives of
Meridian Health Corporation and Jersey Shore University Medial Center.
-The GSC has begun setting up the train layouts for the Holiday Trains.
-Steve G., Joe G. and John T. have done a more extensive exploration of
the buildings to be demolished. An interesting artifact was found in an
attic.
-Mike G. have begun his preparation for his display and Very Marconi
Chrismas
-Henry S. completed the new rain/leaf cover for the hotel basement ramp.
-We dug the eight footing holes for the sentry post (9155) canopy.
-We have made more progress on the 9032 restrooms. The partitions are
reinstalled in the men's room. The next step is to paint the partitions
the dark army green. Next are new toilets and those salvaged historic

InfoAge Meeting, Wednesday, November 18

Hello Everyone,

Wednesday meeting this week (today). We will label and stamp the
American Legion and VFW follow-up postcards. Lots of projects to review...

Just a note about the value of our volunteering.
InfoAge has returned 40,600 square feet of space at Camp Evans to public
benefit service. This is in keeping with our NPS approved plan. All
work meets the secretary of interior standards for the treatment of
historic properties.
Much of this space was unsafe to enter without a haz-mat suit and
personal protective gear when turned over to us.
At $80/square foot as a renovation cost, the value of our work is
*$3,056,000*. This does not include the value of the lead based paint
and mold remediation we performed on nearly all the buildings.
Nor does include the value of work on buildings we have only re-roofed,
repainted and made other repairs.
This is an impressive figure. In addition to this preservation work we
have created an archive, a library, a massive website, saved
collections, set up a radio repair shop, a graphics workshop, fifteen
rooms of exhibits, we maintain the grounds, we publish a newsletter, we
hold commemorative events and we hold regular technical seminars and
educational events. These items also have value above our $3 million
dollar figure.
All this for less than $700,000. How can one explain the difference?
The difference is you.
As we step up to the challenges of growth it is good to take stock of
the value we have brought to our community.

The event is almost here! We have just over 100 that we expect to
attend and I’m really excited about the volunteer opportunities we’ll
have available.* *

*We’re having the pre-event final meeting this Wednesday at 6pm at
InfoAge in the dining hall*. If you are volunteering in any capacity
for Family Volunteer Day behind the scenes (and we need lots of
volunteers!), please try your hardest to attend this meeting and bring
any friends/family you know that can help us out on Family Volunteer Day
too. We will be assigning positions. We will have sandwiches, chips
and drinks for volunteers so come hungry. If you’d like to bring a
dessert or anything else feel free!

An update from Ray Chase:

Present last Wednesday were: Ray C., Dave Sn., Al K., Harry K. and Phil
V. Most of the time was spent clearing up the "Mad Science Lab" and
returning stuff to the RTM museum. Some stuff was left in the H
building pending decisions on storage space. Harry K. completed more
picture hanging devices and another batch of pictures were hung.

Ray

-Blossom has a great 'Make a Difference Day. Thanks to Jamie B. of the
Coast Star for the excellent story on the event.
-Our intern MaryRose has completed her internship. Thanks to Dan L.,
Steve G., Ray C. and company for helping make her experience a good one.
-Thank you to Al Klase for the great presentation justifying why the
Edwin Armstrong and Camp Evans WW2 radio and radar artifacts should be
loaned to InfoAge for public display rather than boxed away in Maryland.
-Dan L. submitted a grant request to the Monmouth County Historic
Commission to help repair sill plate damage to three of our WW2 wood
buildings - 9034, 9029 and 9031.
-We primed a number of signs for future event signs. They are in the
basement. We could make 'Holiday Trains' signs etc.
-Henry S. made great progress on the new rain/leaf cover for the hotel
basement ramp. It passed the tropical storm test this weekend.
-Rich B., and Bob P., have submitted an electrical plan and permit
request to improved the visitor safety at the Diana site. We hope to
fund the work soon.
-John C. gave a talk at the Brookdale Center for WW2 studies.
-Thanks to the Old Wall Historical Society for putting the bound issues
of the Wall Herald in our care.
-Our archives are being sent the lab coat and papers of WW2 / Paperclip
scientist Dr. Hans Thessing who worked at Camp Evans from 1947 to his
retirement. Lots of papers on Laser and Maser work.
-Matt Sampson has moved the gate 3 sentry post (9155) and canopy to gate
2. The Wall DPW moved it to the new pad Matt put in place by gate 2.
The window broken during moving is replaced. This will earn Matt his
eagle award.
-Two new scouts have requested to do their eagle project at Camp Evans
this weekend.
-Scout David Bogner made good progress on his eagle project. Mark
Casner of C&H plumbing helped by moving the old water lines to under the
new sink
-We have made more progress on the 9032 restrooms. The grab bars are
installed. The new water heater is in. The men's room is painted the
Army light green. We re-glazed the windows in which the panes fell
out. Next are new toilets, stall repairs and those salvaged historic
WW2 urinals will go back into sanitary service.
-Also in 9032C we replaced the door in the future AFCEA communications
display room with a salvaged WWII door frame, molding and a door with
the patterned glass. We also removed one of the 1980s solid doors and
replaced it with a salvaged WW2 door. We hope to do this with eleven
doors in 9032 to return the WW2 look.
-Dave Sn. has a great idea for a Thankgiving - November fund raiser. A
driving tour and scare crow contest. Ideas and suggestion welcome.
-I still just need put those two repaired windows in the hotel back into
their frames.
-thank you to Trustee Larry Tormey, and Trustee John Truhan for taking
the next steps in getting ready to submit the CDBG paperwork;
-Trustee Bob G. has made great progress on his Camp Evans history book.
Thanks to Bob's salemanship ITT, General Dynamics and Northrop Grumman
have funded the layout and publishing of 1000 copies of the book.

-A new group is interested in joining InfoAge to help establish their
museum on waves. They made a presentation at this past Wednesday's meeting.
-I met with Rich Franks of Brookdale this week. The idea of InfoAge
taking stewardship of 9013 and related structures rather than
demolishing them is being well received by the administration.
-We were visited by a member of the Princeton Plasma Physics lab. and a
former RCA employee who are heading up a TIROS 50th anniversary
celebration at Princeton.
-We were visited by fellow from the former Edwin Armstrong FM antenna
site at Alpine NJ. Based upon information they told us, we suspect the
may have a large WW2 artifact.

This Sunday we had a good number of visitors. They were a cheep bunch -
only $6.00 in the jar.
On hand were: Steve G., Joann B., Cecily F., Dan J., DJ, Kyle B., Scott,
Dave J., Phil V., Harry K. and Dave Sn.in the Hall of Fame, Neil N.,
Bernie R., Bob B., Dan L., Michele R., Bella R. and many Blossom
volunteers, Sara P., Joe G. and other MARCH staff. Ray, Edith and baby
were at the museum last Sunday too.

**Wall Police Dept as well as other towns are using the second
H-building 9037/37 for K-9 practice. Please do not interfere.

- Dan J. has the Computer education center ready open for business on
Sundays. *We have begun the announcement to the press - we have a draft.*
- Dan do you have another Video computer for Norm L. to set up a video
station?

Today is Veterans Day and Camp Evans played a supporting roll by
receiving the terms of the Armistice by wireless from Europe for relay
to President Wilson. The operator on duty was Frederick Schnell. An
article published after the war in THE WIRELESS AGE stated that the use
of the High-Powered Marconi Wireless Stations (Belmar-New
Brunswick-Carnarvon) helped to shorten WWI and save thousands of lives
on both sides.

**Future Events**

**Things that went on this week** - please send me reminders of
accomplishments.

The Haunted Hotel was a triumph. Many a happy visitor exclaimed "It
was even better than last year". Under Fright Master Nels and Fright
Mistress Judy’s leadership, this year’s event met the goal of raising
enough funds to put a new roof on 9010C. The gross is $33,447.
This historic 1942 structure deserves a new roof for not only its
service during WW2 but it is the space engineers designed components for
the SCORE and TIROS satellites during the early days of the space race.

The creativity, the time and the effort invested in the frightful walk
through 9010D to 9010A and the Hay Ride was simply amazing.

First Nels and Judy Warren. And their understudy Matt for the fourth and
best year.
Thanks to Nels for making sure all safety inspections were done.

In the ticket booth we had Kathy Richel, plus Nels’ sister and
brother-in-law, who provided a hand made bird house to for visitors to
win in a free drawing;
Bob J. of the GSC greeted the visitors in the gate house;
Steve Goulart passed flyers to visitors and resolved any and all issues;
OMARC provided refreshments outside of 9059;
Frank O'Brien purchased water for the thirsty actors
Blossom Int. has a jewelry tent;
Nels provided the wagons. Nels and Pete Richel were the main wagon
drivers.
Joe G., our trained and certified EMT was on hand each night just in
case of problems.
Thanks to Bob P. we had the electric outlets as needed.
Thank you to all who helped with the Haunted Hotel breakdown.

Present were: Al K., Ray C., Harry K. and Dave Snellman

Harry completed some more picture hanging devices and several more
framed portraits were hung. Dave and Ray picked up a small donation of
tubes, parts and TM’s from a retired Ft. Monmouth veteran in Eatontown.
Wallboard was removed from the interior of 9312 and the interior was
cleaned up. Continued sorting, cataloging and tagging accumulated items
for an electronics auction early in 2010.

Harry completed some more picture hanging devices and more framed
portraits were hung. We now have 23 of the over 50 pictures mounted.
The pictures were inventoried to prepare a formal list of what we have.
Some stragglers are still out for framing. Continued work sorting,
cataloging and tagging accumulated items for an electronics auction
early in 2010. Continued sorting stuff in museum office area and
stocking a workbench.

Dave Sica and John Tyminsky delivered hundreds of Marconi blueprints, the "other half" of the collection which we already had at InfoAge. They also brought several dozen bound volumes of historic RCA publications for the NJARC library. All of this material was given to InfoAge by the David Sarnoff Library, with more to come.

-Blossom has a great 'Make a Difference Day. Thanks to the volunteers
for planing 300 bulbs around the hotel. They will bloom in the spring.
-We painted the hotel lounge with a final color. Looks nice.
-Thanks to our intern MaryRose we have a new great looking flyer.
-Remember Dan L. asks you to send articles for the next newsletter.
Deadline is Nov. 30th midnight.
-We primed a number of signs for future event signs. They are in the
basement.

-Jamie G. is finished the work toward his Boy Scout eagle award by
setting up bunk beds in one of the DDU’s so we can host scout camp outs.
-Stanford University will be sending the DDU plans Paul Moore requested
copies of when he visited the Fuller archives.
-We have made excellent progress on the 9032 restrooms. Sinks working.

-The NJ INDUSTRY FILM SCHOOL group has been using Camp Evans for film
instruction the past three weekends
-On the steam Zone valve - Lou R. has found that rebuild kits are
available. We will attempt to rebuild the motors this winter and replace
the valve bodies parts in the spring. - Lou R. is working up an estimate.
- Nels W. Pete R., Kyle B. and Bob W., mowed the whole place. Nels has
begun getting our snow removal equipment ready.
-Dave Sn. has a great idea for a Thankgiving - November fund raiser. A

need put them back in before the winter hits.
-Thanks to Fred Shay the NBHF inducted Richard Hurd at the Friends of

-Norm and Ryan Lemonde are working to interest students to help us build
hands on exhibits;
