A report from Frank O'Brien...
Just a little update on the happenings in New York on Sunday. I attended
the NextHOPE computer conference, whose attendees are, well, quite
computer savvy (the less said about that, the better). Evan and MARCH
were there, and put together a very well set up exhibit with some of
their artifacts. Certainly the display was very well received - there
was always a big group around the tables, and enough March folks to
answer all the attendees questions. I had my AGC on display, as there
was a gent from MIT (Stephen Cass) who was talking about some "hacks"
that were necessary to ensure the success of the Apollo missions. His
was an excellent lecture, and Stephen is someone we should get to know
better. All in all, we had a nice presence at the conference - kudos
to Evan/March for making it happen.
All the best,
Frank

**InfoAge has been a member of ASTC since 1998. They are advocating for
science center funding...

Dear ASTC Members:

As you know, on June 23 ASTC met with staffers from the office of
Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), who serves as the Chairman of the Senate
Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP). During our
productive meeting, we shared our thoughts on the important role science
centers and museums play in informal science education, teacher
professional development, and youth programming. And because one of the
highest priorities on our advocacy agenda is working to make sure that
ASTC members are able to compete for funding from the federal
government, much of the conversation focused on how the Elementary and
Secondary Education Act (ESEA), which is due for reauthorization, could
be revised so that science centers and museums are recognized as
“eligible entities” in key portions of the legislation.

As the meeting ended, I promised to provide Senator Harkin’s staffers
with some further background on informal science education, as well as
some suggestions for ESEA reauthorization as that long process moves
forward. A copy of my follow-up letter to the Senator is attached;
perhaps you will find it useful for your own purposes as well.

I’ll keep you informed about further developments, and hope our
continued interaction will lead to successful outcomes on this front and
others. In the meantime, do feel free to contact me and/or Sean Smith
(ssmith@astc.org ) with your comments and
thoughts, and thank you again for your support.

Bud Rock
