This weeks report from Ray Chase -

Present were: Al K., Harry K., Dave Snellman, Dave Sica and Phil V. The Mad Science Lab was torn down in the Firehouse and smaller items returned to the museum or storage. Larger pieces will be transported this week with Mike G.s flat bed trailer. We should be totally cleared out this week. Picked up lumber for the Exploratorium Kaleidoscope project and stared work on that with one of the science kids. They now indicate a schedule conflict on Wednesdays so not sure how we proceed from here.
Ray

A report from Joe G -

This week, I have been working on telecom museum more. I have begun to refinish one of the PBX's in my possession. I helped in the retrieval of 5 display cases purchased for InfoAge on Friday.

Thank you Ray, Ray and Joe. All reports are welcome.

*Remember - ask first before you start any construction. Thank you Martin for asking is we need a permit to run Cat-5 communications cable. I do not think we do, but that is were I have gotten us in trouble before. I will or Lou will check with the town. I still have to develop an internal form to submit to our 'Building and Grounds committee' prior to any work actions. They will review the form and submit the information to the town.

*Hotel boiler is having issues. Larrison Fuel and Oil completed cleaning. Appears fuel gun needs adjustment. We will check with Central Boiler to get the zone valves the Army disabled working

* We are getting close on picking an IEEE milestone plaque unveiling event in November of December.

InfoAge Meeting, Wednesday, November 3.

Hello Everyone,

No formal meeting tonight. We all need a break and time to catch after the incredible success of the Haunted Hike and NJ Science Festival. All are welcome to work on projects or to help clean up after the Haunted Hike.

**Highlighted Future Events** Remember to check and to send events to calendar@InfoAge.org to have them posted on the planning calendar.

* Nov. 6th NJARC Swap meet
**Date to be set - IEEE Milestone in technology bronze plaque presentation for the 50th anniversary of TIROS. This is Camp Evans second milestone - Project Diana was the first.
**Dates to be set - The Holiday Trains and the VMC aka VMX.

No Report from Ray Chase - resting.

The Haunted Hike was a great success. Everyone has raved and they had great comments. We have raised enough money to re-roof another H-building section. Thank you to the many volunteers who made this a great event. Thank you to to Blossom, OMARC. MARCH, NJHDA, MTMNJ, NJNG, MAST, Rob and the the Shore Players, Laura and the Wall thespians, the Wall ROTC, the CACI employees who helped out and many individuals. Also, the Wall police and to the Wall DPW for patching the many potholes. This was a amazing triumph lead by Nels, Judy with the support of many of our volunteers. If you recall the town refused to issue a permit to hold the event inside any of the buildings. Given the recent fire in one of the abandoned buildings, this was understandable reaction. The challenge was how to you reinvent the event in six weeks. A whole lot of old fashioned - WWII style 'We Can Do IT' made a victory. Over three thousand persons enjoyed our event, we have moved our mission to save the radar laboratory a step further, and we can be proud of how well everything went.

*Thanks to Neil N. and Dan L. the grant application to put a second roof on 9034 to stop the growing number of leaks was put in the mail on time. Nice work on short notice.

***Festering and at times flaming issue - which is getting worse. We now have a stop work order on one of our projects and the requests to inspect 9032 and 9059 have not been acted upon for over a month. Clearly we have issues with the town building department. We need to file for permits when ever we do work on our buildings. Twice I have had to force folks to get permits for electrical work. At times we do not realize we need permits for the work we are doing. We will develop an internal form to submit to our 'Building and Grounds committee' prior to any work actions. They will review the form and submit the information to the town.

*Larrison Fuel and Oil completed cleaning our hotel boiler so we will to be ready for this winter. We need to get them back as the boiler is not running just right. We will check with Central Boiler to get the zone valves the Army disabled working

* Thank you to Steve M. for getting a S-280 radar shelter delivered from Tobyhanna Army depot.

* We are getting close on picking an IEEE milestone plaque unveiling event in November of December.

---Thank you all. See you at next week's meeting

InfoAge Meeting, Wednesday, October 27.

Hello Everyone,

**Highlighted Future Events** Remember to check and to send events to calendar@InfoAge.org to have them posted on the planning calendar.

* The 2010 Haunted Hotel - TWO of our Seven crazy nights are left Oct. 29-30th. FRIDAY and SATURDAY are the LAST nights.
**Date to be set - IEEE Milestone in technology bronze plaque presentation for the 50th anniversary of TIROS. This is Camp Evans second milestone - Project Diana was the first.

Report from Ray Chase:

Present were Ray C., Dave Snellman, Ron B., Al K. and Harry K. Wallboard and insulation was purchased and staged in 9312. Ron B. has started installing insulation. Wiring of 9312 is complete and has been blessed by the inspector. Al K. is continuing work on the Communications room. Fine tuning continues on the Mad Science Lab. Display items were gathered up and prepared for the Science Festival in Clifton. Harry K. took some of them on Wednesday in his station wagon. On Friday, a cargo van was rented and the remainder were loaded with help from Steve G. and brought to the Clifton High School where they were set up by Harry K. and Ray C. The Clifton Science Festival was manned on Saturday by Ray C., Harry K., Matt Reynolds and Fred for several hours. Evan was there with another of his members. On Sunday it was manned by Ray C., Harry K., Matt R., and later by Dave Sica and Richard Lee as well as the Evans crew. The display was folded at 5 PM on Sunday and loaded up with help from Matt, Dave and Richard. Monday morning it was returned to InfoAge with help from Steve G. The Science Festival was fantastically successful, more info to follow.

Comments on the Haunted Hike by Dave Sica - who I am told is an ACE with the smoke ring cannon:

If you haven't made it over to the "Haunted Hike" at InfoAge yet, there
are still two more days to go, this coming Friday and Saturday. The scale
of this event is just awesome. The hike probably covers an acre of ground
and you wouldn't believe how creepy an abandoned army base can be at
night under a full moon! There are dozens of dedicated and talented
actors playing the roles of all kinds of scary creatures and the amount
of work and creativity that's gone into the construction of the displays
is almost beyond my ability to comprehend. The InfoAge Haunted Hike is at
least as ambitious as any Halloween event anywhere and is a good deal
less expensive than many. It's also a major fund raiser for the
organization and a great tool for outreach into the community.

This past weekend was the first time I really participated in the event.
I had breezed through with a camera last year but working behind the
scenes in the mad scientist lab was something else. My hat is off to the
NJARC guys (primarily Ray Chase, Harry Klancer, Al Klase and Dave
Snellman) who put together a real crowd pleaser. You'll see pictures in the
NJARC newsletter and on the website, but you really have to be there in
person to get the full effect. And although the customers loved it, I can
personally guarantee you that it's even more fun to be part of the crew!

Most everyone (of the thousands of folks who've passed through so far)
left with a big smile on their face, even some of the older kids who came
in with a bit of a chip on their shoulder, as if they were just too cool
for us to possibly be able to entertain them. One teenaged skeptic even
left saying "hey man, thanks, that was great!"

The really scary part is that all during the event I kept getting ideas
on even more things we could do NEXT year.

The Haunted Hike is going great. Everyone has great comments. We have raised just over $24,000. We are well on the way to being able to put a new roof on one of the 9011 sections. Thank you to the many volunteers who are making this a great event. Thank you to the CACI employees who helped out and hopefully had fun too. As always, Blossom, OMARC. MARCH, NJHDA, MTMNJ, NJNG, MAST, Rob and the the Shore Players, Laura and the Wall thespians, the Wall ROTC. Plus the walk is safer thanks to Wall DPW patching the many potholes. Please come volunteer and have some fun at the same time.

The NJ Science Festival was great. I can not put it any better than Dave Sica:

"I was able to drop by for the last couple of hours today to help pack up
the exhibit.

Wow!

I have a friend who always says "if you want to be big, you've got to
look big." The InfoAge booth looked ten times better than the display put
on by Liberty Science Center and as good or better than nearly everything
else there. And I was blown away by the kids; I guess the ones who
dragged their parents there (or maybe were dragged there by their
parents) were exactly our target audience. I've never been peppered with
so many questions before! It was so much fun talking to little kids who
got all excited about this stuff. And it was also a little bit
encouraging that maybe the future of our country isn't going completely
to hell in a handbasket after all. Major kudos go to they guys who put
together this impressive display."
--Dave Sica

***It was fun and the five eras of computer development dioramas were a big hit. Mel dropped off a box of flyers to go with his exhibit. The satellites were a good draw too. MARCH had a great display and lots of interested visitors. We hope this outreach will net InfoAge more visitors and more supporters.

***Thank you Ray and Dave for the reports.

*On Monday we had the pleasure of hosting the Monmouth County Historical Commission meeting at InfoAge. The commissioners spent lots of time in the museums. They have helped us with grants to put a new roof on the TIROS building, repair the WWII addition on the Marconi Power plant, fix structure issues with 9029, 9031 and 9034. Neil is working on a grant to have a second roof put on 9034 to stop the growing number of leaks. Last count was eight.

***Festering and at times flaming issue.
* The buildings and Grounds committee met on Monday at 9 AM.

*Our CBDG is moving along thanks to Lou R. and John Truhan. We are waiting on the bid specs.
*Larrison Fuel and Oil completed cleaning our hotel boiler so we will to be ready for this winter. They recommended working with Central Boiler to get the zone valves the Army disabled working

* Mike G. visited Brian Boyce, who makes amazing WWII dioramas. Brian would like to display some of his dioramas at InfoAge. Mike loves his dioramas.
* Thank you to Mike G. for the new giant door mat at the back of the hotel.
* Thank you to Jamie B. for calling us to put together a story on our Haunted Hike.

--This Sunday we had a low number volunteers on site (due to Haunting Hangovers), but a nice flow of guests. On site were JoAnnn B., Frank O., Joe G., Neil N., Dave Snellman of the NJARC and others I am sure if have missed.

---Thank you all. See you are the meeting

Ray

The Haunted Hike is going great. Everyone has great comments. We have raised just over $13,100. We have kept expenses down this year by creative reuse of previous years materials. So we are well on the way to being able to put a new roof on one of the 9011 sections. The kids love the train. The actors make the show lots of scary fun. Based on the comments of visitor's if we gave a Best Actor award - it would be DJ. We have moved the Casper house to the hotel dinning room as building 9059 is not available. Thank you to the many volunteers who are making this a great event. This weekend we will be without Judy's leadership so we will need extra help. Please come volunteer and have some fun at the same time.

The roof leaks in the H-building main hallway are gone as the remaining part of the hall was re-roofed on Monday. We also had the leak in the Hotel Piazza repaired. This turned out to be worst than expected. It is good we did this before winter.

*Thanks to Harry K. and the NJARC we are making progress on an exhibit at the NJ science festival.

*The IEEE celebrated the naming of TIROS I as a historic milestone in technology history at a dinner at the Sarnoff facility on Monday the 27th. Frank O'Brien, Dave Sica and I represented us. The IEEE commissioned a second plague our TIROS site. We will have an installation ceremony. Dru Reynolds is setting the date in November.

* Brian Boyce, who makes amazing WWII dioramas met with Mike G. on Sunday. Mike will visit Brian's home to see his work. Brian would like to display some of his dioramas at InfoAge.

--This Sunday we had a low number volunteers on site, but a nice flow of guests. On site were JoAnnn B., Frank O., Joe G., Dan and Terry L., Neil N., Jeff B. and Matt N. of MARCH, Aaron H. of NJARC and others I am sure if have missed.

Report from Ray Chase:

Our Wednesday work day actually started on Tuesday when Ray C., Ron B., Al K., Dave Snellman and Phil V. put in a full day getting our Mad Science Display set up in the Firehouse. Then on Wednesday, the same crew minus Phil V. but added to by Harry K. put in another full day continuing with our Halloween display.

Report from Joe G.
This week, I spent much time preparing to attend the World Maker Faire at the New York Hall of Science to represent InfoAge with a booth and a display. Over the course of the weekend, Steve Goulart, Matt Reynolds of NJARC and myself manned the booth. We made some interesting contacts, and the stack of brochures we brought all but disappeared. This event made obvious a change or two that should be made to the brochure. On Tuesday, I secured a donation of a fairly recent small office copier that is fully functional and came with an additional unused toner cartridge.

Joe Giliberti

Report from Martin Flynn: Here's the list of what we accomplished for Wednesday's meeting:

Backboard for data and telecomm equipment in 9116 mounted by Jeff Harshman, Ron Oleander, and myself. Jeff will paint during week. Data equipment and cabling will be installed next weekend.

Additional J type lock cores acquired, waiting on visit from Best Locks for advise on keying.

Main distribution frame in 9059 cleared of unused jumpers in preparation for PBX installation.

Tested existing telephone cable from 9006 to 9059, determined length. Length tests indicates cables are terminated either in vault or on distribution frame in 9059.

Determined what portions of existing distribution frame in 9059 are suitable for re-use, developing drawings for permitting process.

Cast iron extension wings for workshop table saw have been acquired.

Starter (control relay) for shop air compressor was acquired.

Harris audio console for future broadcast radio exhibit delivered to museum.

Thank you Ray, Joe and Martin for the reports as well as the excellent work.

***NOTE: Our fiscal year ended Sept 30th. Judy and I will be working to get our records to our accountant in the easy audit-able format. Please finish the evaluations of the few remaining non-cash contributions - please - I hate hunting you down and nagging you****

*The fifth Wall of Honor was a great event. It was touching to see the families of the two honorees proudly pose for photos with all their children and grandchildren. It was also nice to thank our former trustees for their service - Andy DeAngelo, Barb Ruane, and Larry Tormey. Thank you to Lynn B, Mike G. and the BOT for a ton of work to make this event a success. Thanks to Mike G. the dining room, foyer and lounge looked great. Thank you to Capt. Jim Steinbaugh and the Wall ROTC for opening the ceremony as color guards. Thank you to Dave Snellman for getting the sound system setup. Dave Sica documented the event with a 2--camera professional video setup. Now the programs are done, food enjoyed, tables set and cleared, signs were made, licenses secured, plaques presented, tons of hard work and lots of details were completed.
--It is sad to report that Trustee Dunkin Thecker passed away at age 95. If not for Dunkin's and Pat's kindness we would not have the beautiful dining room finished so nicely.
*Thanks to Harry K. and the NJARC we are making progress on an exhibit at the NJ science festival.
*Lou R. has filed the paperwork for a CCO inspection in 9032 and 9059. Joe and Steve have been doing the final details that show we care.
*Thanks to Nels, Judy and their legions of volunteers the new and improved Haunted Hike's first night was fantastic. Matt Orgill's website, complete with a promotional video is great. The visitors like the new hike. So many persons have helped. A special thanks to Ken C. and the Wall Public Works who patched over 16 potholes along to Hike. No one fell or hurt themselves in the holes and once the Halloween events are over our roads are in better shape. I can not possibly name all who have helped and are helping make the Haunted Hike a success. A separate email is called for. We hope the raise enough funds to re roof another H-building section. Twelve of the sixteen sections are haunted by rain leaks. We have to stop the drips from HELL. Thanks to Judy and Jamie B. our Haunted Hike had a nice article in the Coast Star. This had to boost attendance.
*Thanks to State Senator Sean Kean bill SCR85 was unanimously passed by the NJ Senate. Next stop is the Assembly.
*We located the lost water shut off for the TIROS building 9162. It took a lot of digging. The shutoff needs repair or replacement. The Wall Twp. is helping out. Capt Steinbaugh of Wall H.S. is working with the school to get us help to reactivate a restroom in the TIROS building so they can use it. Our next step is to add the handicap restroom architect Paul Moore designed for the extra space created when we modernized the heat and added A/C.
*OMARC had a Ham Fest on Oct. 2 - one of their best.
* Dan Leib has been doing a great job distributing our brochure. We have 5,000 more on hand.
*We may be given early radar information by Arthur Viewgers family for our archive.
Thanks to John Cervini and Paul Zigo of Brookdale are in discussions with a fellow, Brian Boyce, who makes amazing WWII dioramas. He would like to display some at InfoAge.
* John Cervini has plans to reach out to Columbia University to team with them to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Regenerative Circuit at our site when it was the Marconi Belmar High- powered Wirless station. I bet Al Klase would help.
* Evan (no s) Koblentz has been making more progress in researching Camp Evans roll in early computer development.
*Steve G. has been our man on site, helping all who need to get access or have questions.
* BRAC contractors are at work near the river working on 9004 and 9005 the original Marconi operations building and the suspected U.S. Navy auxiliary operations building built during WWI.
* We have over 40 additional folding tables thanks to the purchase of heavy duty folding table leg sets. We took the wood tops off the the metal desks left at Camp Evans by the Army. A $500 investment in legs and volunteer time has netted us way over $4000.00 worth of tables.
*Thank you to Dan and Terry Lieb, Neil Norell and Mike Golub for hosting the meeting of the Life Saving Service Historical Society.
* We are working toward submitting a grant request to the Monmouth County Historical Commission. In the running are a second roof for 9034, Repairs to the roof and replacement doors for 9097, the foundry and the way out idea of moving the WWII special antenna shelter 9020 to the historic district to save it from demo. I meet with one contractor today, a second tomorrow and possibly a third.
* As always, Nels and Pete have the site looking great. I donated and planted 12 more giant hostas to make the front of the Marconi Hotel look more landscaped.
* We hosted a second Ice Cream to help 'Rescue Ridge' raise funds for their animal rescue mission.
*This Month we have displays on Camp Evans history in the Wall Township and Howell Township libraries.
*Our National Historic landmark application is progressing thanks to Robie Lange of the NPS.
*Thank you to News Channel 12 and Mr. Kurt Siglan for the spot on the TIROS anniversary.

--This Sunday and the Sunday prior we had lots of volunteers were on site; JoAnnn B., Frank O., Joe G., Dan and Terry L., Neil N., Nels & Judy W., Jeff B. and Matt N. of MARCH, Herb Johnson formerly of MARCH, Phil V., Ray C., Dan J., Scott W., Chief Milko, Tizzie, Stacie S., Pete, John C., Rob the Shore Players lighting guy, and others.

As always, you know I forget stuff as I am putting this email together. I even forget stuff I do. Until I get the right medication I could use help. Send in a quick email on Monday of what you did. It is important we record all the work we have done. As you look back on past emails in our blog (thankd Dave Sica) it is impressive how much we have gotten done. And, you can reduce how annoyed I get with myself as I drive to work and things I forgot pop into my head.

---Thank you all. See you are the meeting

Report from Joe G.
This week, I did lots of work on the telecom building. With help from Steve G, I completed the repair of the broken door of the utility room. With the help of Steve G. we picked up a truckload of professional Halloween items donated by Charles Sidun of Little Silver. The donation is worth over $5,000.

Report from Dan L.:

From Dan Lieb
The Brochure Exchange rack is up. The brochures are from other organizations and sites that display our brochure for the public to pick up. This is an experiment to see if it will draw visitors to InfoAge. The sites are mostly local. I will maintain the brochures at all locations. If they need any, I'll drop them off and pick up more of their's. If there are any suggestions for a brochure you want to see added, make sure you can get plenty and that the site will display our brochures. The site should be a tourist attraction such as a park or museum.

An amazing report from Mike Golub: Continuing to make Wall of Honor progress!!

The Coat Room is set up. DONE!

A report from Joe G.
This week, I did a good deal of work in the telcom building. I cleared
the second room in order to make necessary repairs. I moved three
plugboard PBX's from 9006 to a staging area in the H building to get
them ready for display. I also received a donation for the telcom museum
of several telephones, including some odd Automatic Electric ones.
Theres probably more, but I don't know what right now.

*** What a weekend - Symposium, a Eagle Scout court of Honor, two Eagle
projects in the works and mighty amounts of work to have our site and
buildings looking great.

The first WWII Symposium was a success due to John Cervini's
leadership. We have over 45 attendees. The lectures were enjoyed by
all. The artifacts and new poster exhibit complemented the day.

Thanks to Nels, Pete, Joe G, Mike G. John T. and Steve G. for mowing the
lawns, edging, cleaning the parking lot, waxing the dining room floor
with many coats of wax, shampooing the hotel carpets, washing the 9032A
floor and getting the chairs, getting the audio set up, putting up signs
and more. Thank you to Judy for staffing the entrance booth.

Thanks to Dan L. for getting all our Camp Evans Service Branch Manual
posters printed and hung in the 9032 halls. Thanks to Bob P. for getting
the hallway lights in place and Joe G. for finding fixtures that look
close to the original.
Thanks to the speakers: Ray Chase, Dan Lieb/Cptain Dan Crowell, John
Cervini, Al Klase, Fred Carl and Evan Koblentz.
Thank you to Steve G. for helping Alex Lo's mom with all the eagle court
of honor preparation.
A special thanks to Mike G. for providing food, refreshments and coffee
for the event.
--It was a great day thanks to the work of many - named above and many
who helped without being seen.

InfoAge Meeting, Wednesday, August 4.

Hello Everyone,

Today we have a regular meeting at 6:45 PM. Main topic - 9010C and
planning for NJ Science Festival.

**Highlighted Future Events** Remember to check and to send events to
calendar@InfoAge.org to have them posted on the planning calendar.

* Aug 15th V-J Day + 65 = WWII Seminar and radar laboratory victory
celebration.
* Sept 25th Wall of Honor 2010
* The 2010 Hauted Hotel - Eight crazy nights Oct 8-9, 15-16, 22-23, &
29-30th.

A report from Ray Chase of the NJARC

Present were: Ron B., Harry K., John T., Ray C., & Al K. Worked on
installing lights in Bldg. 9312, sorted a large batch of club tubes and
secured them in the museum, completed repair on AK console radio for use
in guard shack, worked on communications room in 9032 C and added
security latches to door in EW room.

NJARC held their annual summer swap meet at InfoAge on Saturday 24
July. Because of the "Eagle" situation we could not hold it at our
normal location, the front lawn of cottage #2 so we relocated to the
grass area south of 9032 A. Actually this may have worked out better as
there was more room and shade there. In spite of weather forecasts of
steamy temperatures and possible showers the attendance was good and all
seemed to have a good time. Fortunately the shade and a good steady
breeze kept things reasonably comfortable. A reporting/photographing
team from the Coast Star gave us a good spread in the paper. Special
thanks to the team of Nels & Pete who manicured the grounds so well that
many attendees complimented InfoAge on how well the place is
maintained. It's a ton of work, especially in this hot weather. Don't
have financial results yet but all had a good time and some new locals
came to see InfoAge.

A report from Joe G.
On Thursday, (with the help of Steve G.) I moved the remaining Blossom
materials to The Madonna House, a non-profit child welfare organization
located in Neptune.
On Friday, I converted the former model train room into a volunteer
lounge. It is outfitted with an air conditioner, sofas and seating, a
table and chairs, a computer with internet access and laser printer, and
the refrigerator from the wireless operator's lounge
On Monday, I emptied the room adjacent to the volunteer lounge, and have
set it up as a store room and pantry. Within its cabinets, things such
as general purpose tools, the projectors, and office supplies are
located. It also holds a working microwave oven and coffee maker. I also
began to work on clearing / cleaning the former gift shop.
On Tuesday, I completed work on the gift shop, and finished up by
organizing the kitchenette across the hall from the volunteer lounge.
See you at the meeting!
Joe

InfoAge Meeting, Wednesday, July 28.

Hello Everyone,

Today we have a BOT meeting at 4 PM them we will will have a regular

* Aug 15th V-J Day + 65 = WWII Seminar and radar laboratory victory
celebration.
* Sept 25th Wall of Honor 2010

First a note of thanks from Harry K.:
As many of you know, NJARC held our annual Summer Swapmeet
under the trees at InfoAge this past Saturday.
This note is a special thanks to Nels and Pete who worked really
hard in the intense heat to make sure the grounds were really
spiffy. Lots of folks commented on how great the place looked,
so again - Nels and Pete - thanks very much.
Harry Klancer,
vp NJARC

Now a note from Dan Lieb:
On Saturday, July 24, Nels Warren and Pete Reichel helped out NJMT and
NJHDA by skillfully using the forklift to lower the large exhaust out of
the tower in 9057. This will allow us to us the tower as a vent for
clearing gases produced while conserving our cannon and locomotive
pieces. He did more work than I did, and I cannot thank Nels enough.

Next, Nels again helped NJHDA out by using the forklift to pick up and
carry our 3,000+ pound anchor from the OMARC site to in front of the
TelEx Building where it will reside until the lawn at the top of the
drive behind the hotel is properly graded. Again, I cannot thank him
enough.

For now, we hope to get an article in the Coast Star about the move. We
also hope to encourage others to create outdoor attractions for a
walking tour of our science center.

Regards,
Dan Lieb

**It is amazing what Nels can do with the fork lift. He is a
Zen-Master. Nels also relocated picnic tables to a shady location for
the NJARC members and guests to enjoy lunch outside the 9032A cooling
station.

A report from Steve G.:

A report from Frank O'Brien...
Just a little update on the happenings in New York on Sunday. I attended
the NextHOPE computer conference, whose attendees are, well, quite
computer savvy (the less said about that, the better). Evan and MARCH
were there, and put together a very well set up exhibit with some of
their artifacts. Certainly the display was very well received - there
was always a big group around the tables, and enough March folks to
answer all the attendees questions. I had my AGC on display, as there
was a gent from MIT (Stephen Cass) who was talking about some "hacks"
that were necessary to ensure the success of the Apollo missions. His
was an excellent lecture, and Stephen is someone we should get to know
better. All in all, we had a nice presence at the conference - kudos
to Evan/March for making it happen.
All the best,
Frank

**InfoAge has been a member of ASTC since 1998. They are advocating for
science center funding...

Dear ASTC Members:

As you know, on June 23 ASTC met with staffers from the office of
Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), who serves as the Chairman of the Senate
Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP). During our
productive meeting, we shared our thoughts on the important role science
centers and museums play in informal science education, teacher
professional development, and youth programming. And because one of the
highest priorities on our advocacy agenda is working to make sure that
ASTC members are able to compete for funding from the federal
government, much of the conversation focused on how the Elementary and
Secondary Education Act (ESEA), which is due for reauthorization, could
be revised so that science centers and museums are recognized as
“eligible entities” in key portions of the legislation.

As the meeting ended, I promised to provide Senator Harkin’s staffers
with some further background on informal science education, as well as
some suggestions for ESEA reauthorization as that long process moves
forward. A copy of my follow-up letter to the Senator is attached;
perhaps you will find it useful for your own purposes as well.

I’ll keep you informed about further developments, and hope our
continued interaction will lead to successful outcomes on this front and
others. In the meantime, do feel free to contact me and/or Sean Smith
(ssmith@astc.org ) with your comments and
thoughts, and thank you again for your support.

Bud Rock

---As always, good work Ray and company. Thank you the the members of
the NJARC for the nice donations. They help.

Reports from Ron O. and OMARC:
Last week end we had our field day at the Diana site (6/26/27). Hundreds
of contacts were made with amateurs throughout the U.S and Canada. We
were visited by the Mayor of Wall and he was very impressed with our
operation and that we were keeping the grounds looking nice. He had a
lot of good things to say in general about InfoAge. We were also visited
by the Spring Lake Fire Chief, Ed MeGill.
The sewer system for building 9116 was cleaned out by General Sewer
and Plumbing Svc, Inc. the day before we had our field day. Nothing
definite was found but we experienced no trouble with the system
throughout the field day week-end with over 20 people using the system.
Perhaps something was dislodged while he was cleaning the line out.
We're still not able to pinpoint exactly where the lid is located.
That's all for now,

InfoAge Meeting, Wednesday, June 30.

Hello Everyone,

We will have a regular meeting at 6:45 PM. Please RSVP so I can
determine if to bring two or three pizzas.

**Highlighted Future Events** Remember to check and to send events to
calendar@InfoAge.org to have them posted on the planning calendar.

celebration.
* Sept 25th Wall of Honor 2010

The Wall Township Committee meeting at InfoAge went well. All the
members were very encouraging in their public comments on our progress.
We thanked the current members for holding this second committee
meeting at InfoAge. We thanked InfoAge BOT members Claire French and
John Cervini, who also attended, for their support for over a decade.
The Township committee members are the current representatives of a body
which has enabled and supported InfoAge since 1994. We thanked them for
the TRUST they have given us and the FUNDS they have placed at our
disposal to maintain the 37 acre historic district. Not every community
would take the risk. For taking that risk we have delivered over $5
million in improvements and the community has given a gift to our nation
by saving this amazing historic site. Thanks to their support the Wall
Township taxpayers are enjoying tax savings at this difficult time
thanks to the work of our volunteers. We challenged the committee to
embrace saving Camp Evans as a community project. The cost of replacing
the remaining roofs is $350,000. Once the roofs are replaced we have
met the minimal terms of the surplus historic properties program. The
buildings will be stabilized. We accepted the historic property and its
buildings and agreed to save the site and its buildings as a historic
site. We asked they use their influence to encourage the Public to
donate to save the roofs. We also pointed out the time is getting
closer for Wall and other local schools schools to partner with
InfoAge. We can provide low cost space for special programs and
possibly even laboratory space. This will reduce taxpayer costs and
help improve the delivery of science history education.

The eagle... The eagle chick has made its first flight and left the
nest. The state will be giving the town permission to remove the
barricades from our parking lot after July 5th. We will be able to cut
the hedges and grass outside the restricted area around cottage 9003 and
its garage. We will be able to use the Marconi Road parking lot for
normal activities. After August 1st the restrictions on the areas north
of Marconi Road will be removed. This will enable us to remove the
fallen branches, repair the roof damage to the 9003 garage, repair the
9003 sewer line problems, continue work on the walking paths along the
river, remove the over-grow along the road to 9004/5 and announce the
completion of three paths and the Rum-runners grove by eagle scouts for
public enjoyment of the river area.

Report from Ray Chase and the Wednesday team:
Present were: Ray C., Al K., Harry K., Dave Snellman, Vince L. and Ron
B. Most of the new men's room stall latches were installed in 9032 and
the rest rooms were cleaned. Wiring for outlets in 9312 was completed.
Work continued on the teletype in the communications room, it's not
fully working yet but no further smoke. Ron has finished painting the
walls in the 9032 C room, the floor is next. We are trying to finalize
a video display to show how a Theremin is really played. Adjustments
were made to the 9032 D&C vestibule ramp to clear an interference.
Venetian blinds salvaged from Brookdale buildings were washed for the
9032 communications room.
Question: are we doing anything for Wall Day??
--Thank you Ray and company

Reports from Joe G.:
This week, I sorted the building drawings I cataloged so as to free up
the upstairs for renovation. Between the Radiological Shield building
and the explosion proof chamber, it was really interesting. Today
(Tuesday), I got some more stuff listed on ebay to hopefully give us
some extra space and some extra cash.
--Thank you Joe.

***Reports are requested from Nels and Pete (who do so much I can not
keep up), Mike G. who is a one man wonder, and others. You guys do great
work - we should record it to show what we have do and to challenge
others to do as well.

*Thank you to Steve Makrinos for the donation of his personal files to
the InfoAge Archives. We will inventory the documents and put post the
list on the web.
*Ron B. donated a metal divers helmet, sea knife and weighted boots to
NJHDA. Dan Leib is ecstatic over the donation. He has a great idea for
a fun exhibit using the helmet.
*NJHDA had a spot on Wednesday the 23rd on News Ch12. It included a
spot inside the shipwreck museum.
*Dan arranged for a film crew to use 9043 for some filming by Proper
Television - They gave us a cash donation.
*We have asked for a estimate to repair the hotel chimney leaks,
complete the re-roofing of the main H-building corridor by 9036/7 D as
well as the 9036 A/B north central corridor entrance. This will
eliminate four major leaks in the roof.
*We sent another CD of labeled aerial photos of Camp Evans from 1971 to
the NPS to help with the NHL application.
*The NJ Senate Bill SCR-85 is in the Veterans Affairs committee. We
hope for further action in September.
*We have word from BRAC that the septic tanks removal work may occur in
July or August. The transfer of 9004 and 9005 may occur in 9011.
*We have started repairing the damaged and fallen sheet rock sections in
9010A.
*The pre-publication book sales for "Camp Evans - the Untold Story"
continue to increase.
*Joe G. has nearly completed a massive archive project. Months ago
volunteers began cataloging the hundreds of architectural drawings of
the 50+ buildings at Camp Evans. John T. helped the project progress.
Finally we took over 9032A, set up lots of tables and sorted for two
days. The last step is to arrange all the drawings, store they away and
list them on our archive web page.
*Thank you to Hannah and Leslie for organizing the west room of 9059
*Thanks to Katie Lobosco of the Coast Star for the nice story and photos
of Nels car show and Mikes' flea market.
*Thanks to a great donation by Laura Parker's drama Club we will finish
the work of creating a stage in 9032A. Laura suggested the name
'InfoStage'.
*Evan K., Jeff B., and Bill D. of MARCH painted a good portion of the
floor in 9010C. Evans actually did physical work. I took photos as
proof. Who says he can only click a mouse.
*Thanks to Nels, Kyle and Pete for watering our plantings. We have
thousands of dollars of plants - this dry spell is threating them.

The Sunday was busy in spite of the heat. On site we had Evan K., Jeff
B,. Bill D., Nels W., Pete R., Joe G., John C., Phil V., Dave Sn., Kyle
B., Dan J., D.J., Scott W., Steve G., Ray C., Dan and Luke G., Lee
Holland, Jamie and Ron B., Norm and Ryan L., and me.

InfoAge Meeting, Wednesday, June 16.

Hello Everyone,

We will be meeting tonight at 6:45PM.

**Highlighted Future Events** Remember to check and to send events to
calendar@InfoAge.org to have them posted on the planning calendar.
* June 19th Classic Car Show & Yard Sale
* June 21st 4PM BOT Meeting
* June 23rd Wall Township Committee holds its meeting at InfoAge.
* Aug 15th V-J Day + 65 = WWII Seminar and radar laboratory victory
celebration.
* Sept 25th Wall of Honor 2010

We have been extremely busy getting ready for our classic car show
and the yard sale. Nels and Pete have the site looking better than ever.

Reports from Ray Chase and the Wednesday team:
Present were Ray C., Harry K., Al K., Dave Snellman and Ron B. Harry
and Dave scrapped and re-painted the RTM outside sign that had suffered
from the winter weather. Ron continued as a first class painter in the
communications room, 9032 C. Al continues on planning for that room.
We also made a trip to Freehold to work on our display at the Jewish
Heritage museum that open on June 1st.
Present were: Ray C., Harry K., Dave Snellman and Ron B. Ron was back
to his painting role in the 9032 Communications room. Some planning for
9312 was done alone with work on repairing the wooden walk up to the
9032 D & C vestibule. The stall door latches in the 9032 rest rooms are
being replaced with new ones; the originals are too gummed up with years
of paint.

Reports from Joe G.:
This week, I have nearly finished sorting through InfoAge for garage
sale fodder. If anyone has something that they would be willing to
donate to the garage sale to be sold, please contact me at
starbase89@gmail.com. My current plan is that on Wednesday before the
meeting, everyone will come out to the yard sale section to make sure I
am not selling any heirlooms or treasures. I also got help in continuing
the organization of 9010, to hopefully finish it soon. On Sunday, I
drove out to a couple of Lowes Hardware stores, and obtained all needed
lights and hardware for the main corridor in 9032.
This week, Judy Warren and I began to set up the garage sale merchandise
in 9037. Between arranging things and pricing, it will probably take a
few more days to complete. I also worked on Monday to clean up the
"clearing barrel" area near the front gate. The garbage in there was
enough to half-fill a trash bag. I began work this weekend on a holding
bin for garbage bags that will be located outside the gate, up against
the guard shack 9093. Lastly, I have been helping Steve G. in working on
bringing the 8-legged testing tower back to life as our WiFi hotspot and
security outpost. Between Saturday and Sunday, I entered ~350 drawings
into the database, and more day should finish the pile. I put some
interesting ones, namely a contamination report from 1996, and the
electrical layouts for the hotel's blackout system.

A report from our June 9th Wednesday meeting from John Cervini:
Dave Snellman: In the WWII memorial communications room equipment
decisions to be made by Al Klase. TTY in exhibit. A switch board
planned, plus tank communications and Jammers.
Steve G.: Working on removing stained and damaged drop ceiling in
9010A. Looking to find power feed to 9178 tower. Work on Lock system
and workshop continues.
Chris Szabo, a new member joined our Wednesday meeting
Lou R.: Had the quote for the dining room and lounge AC ready to be
signed. This project is funded by an excellent gift by ITT.
Dan L.: In 9057 the door jams are up and primed. 9032 area is cleaned
for the car show. Placemat program is progressing. Brochure exchange
project going well. Articles for next Newsletter due July 31st .
Contactor done with all the work except the clean-up and inspection of
9029, 31 and 34. News 12 series – ‘Treasure Hunting’ will have a
program on NJHDA.
Terry L.: Membership program going well. We have gained nearly $3500 in
donations. We are creating standard letters, thank you and other
forms. Terry will have a membership table at the garage sale. The new
‘down-sized’ 2 sided brochure will cost $800 for 5000.
Will S.: His group will begin working on their wave science exhibit in
9010A.
Mike G.: Good progress on the garage sale. Thanks to Dan L. for making
banners.

--Thank you to all, thank you to Joe G for getting the pizza and thank
you to John for the meeting notes.

Bob Giordano has his book “Camp Evans – The Untold Story” at the
printers. This a tremendous accomplishment. I hope to remember to
attach an order form to this email before I hit ‘send’.

John Cervini’s WWII electronic warfare exhibit is getting better every
week. Thanks to Ray C. for securing one of the ‘Invasion of Japan’
radio jammers for the exhibit. Luckily this one and thousands like it
were not needed.

Boy Scout Tim Troppoli is now an Eagle. He is the 16th young man who
has earned his eagle award helping preserve Camp Evans. Tim finished
the ‘Fallout shelter theater’. Thank you to Steve G., Dan L and many
others who helped Tim with his project. Our 17th Eagle could be Alex
Lo, grandson of a D-Day soldier. His court of honor is planned for Aug.
15th in our dining room. Alex made repairs to 9029 – the WWII guard
Headquarter building.

The Eagles - things have been quiet. The last report an eagle watcher
made to the police was not followed up by the state eagle patrol.
Please do not enter the closed off area. During the car show we are
simply to use our Marconi Road parking lot for parking only. If you use
the parking lot, you must go immediately and directly into a building.
We have a new layout for this event. The Coast Star has a story of how
Sea Girt was fined $53,000 by the Federal Wildlife Service and the NJ
DEP for the 2007 death of a beach plover chick. The parties were in
court for years. At $53K for a small plover, we do not want to find the
price on an eagle.

Bill M. Cablevision has let us know the segment on our TIROS celebration
on his Neighborhood Journal is now available via Cablevisions ‘On
Demand’. Thank you to Bill.

State Senator Sean T. Kean and Senator James Beach has introduced Senate
Concurrent Resolution No. 85 on March 4, 2010 which recognizes Camp
Evans for its designation for its as a State and National Historic
District and supporting its preservation as World War II living
memorial. You can read the bill by visiting the NJ Legislature website
and entering SCR85. We should discuss ways to support the passage of
this bill and how to use it to create publicity. I attended a
breakfast sponsored by Assemblyman Dave Rible to meet Lt. Governor Kim
Guadagno. I gave the Lt. Governor a folder with a formal letter to
request her support for the bill and an introduction to Camp Evans.

As you know saving Camp Evans (The Signal Corps Radar Laboratory)
honors and represents the tens of thousands of New Jersey residents and
veterans of the greatest generation who designed and tested the prototypes
as well as the those who manufactured the radio, radar and other
advanced electronics that helped win WII. The National Park Service is
in process to designate Camp Evans as a National Historic Landmark for
its WWII Home front service. To quote President Truman on August 6,
1945, "The Battles of the laboratories held fateful risks for us as well
as the battles of the air, land and sea, and we have now won the battles
of the laboratories as we have won the other battles." To quote Winston
Churchill, "This was a secret war, whose battles were lost or won
unknown to the public; and only with difficulty is it comprehended, even
now, by those outside the small high scientific circles concerned. No
such warfare had ever been waged by mortal men. ---Winston Churchill

Thanks to Board Member Jim Allen a group of us will be meeting with
Assemblyman Declan J. O'Scanlon Jr. to discuss keeping the Fort Monmouth
Museum in NJ, specifically at Camp Evans. You know we will ask his
support for the bill also.

We have been invited to have a classroom size exhibit at the The *New
Jersey Science and Engineering Festival* * * www.njsciencefestival.org
Note a InfoAfe logo in their
sponsor list on their homepage. The festival will be taking place at
the Clifton High School Complex (the largest single campus high school
in New Jersey, with 100,000 sq. ft. of indoor and outdoor exhibition
space) and Essex County (Caldwell) Airport on the weekend of October 23
and 24, 2010. It is a satellite event of the *USA Science and
Engineering Festival*, which will be taking place on the National Mall
in Washington, DC. Here is the link to the USA Festival
www.usasciencefestival.org

We are making progress on our Community Block Grant thanks to Larry
Tormey and John Truhan. This will repair many of the broken curbs and
sidewalks around the hotel, 9032 and the center entrance to 9010.

The 22 international exchange students (AFS) who enjoyed their visit to
InfoAge sent us a nice donation.

Thanks to Pete R., Matt and Dan G. They opened the expanded Military
Technology Museum vehicle display in 9011. It looks great. They had it
ready for the veterans visit and the anniversary of V-E day
At the request of Randy G. and the Monmouth County Historical
Commission's we attended the follow-up meeting on the Weekend in Olde
Monmouth. We are looking forward to next years event.

After Nels cleaned up the mess behind 9033 we improved the landscaping
and planted several dozen variegated hosta plants to make the area look
nice and discourage its use as a catch all area.

Thank you to Judy W. for making the membership database updates,
preparing dozens of thank you notes, taking an inventory of items in the
hotel and recording the folder tabs in our files for easy information
and document location.

Thanks to Michele and Blossom our friends at the New Outlook Pioneers
were about to use extra care-pack donations for their underprivileged
Backpack program.

Thank you to Dan L. for making the new sign to point visitors to the
MTMof NJ historic vehicle exhibit.

Mike G. had a truck load of wood chip mulch delivered to improve the
look of the hotel flower beds.

Evan K., Jeff F. and other MARCH members with the help of Steve G. and
Joe G. are getting a section of 9010C ready for the expanded MARCH
exhibit.

Thank you to Dave Sica for continuing to post information to the InfoAge
blog and also thanks to Michele for creating the InfoAge facebook page.
Cori is setting up a Twitter account for us.

***Reports requested from Nels and Pete (who do so much I can not keep

*Reasons to tell persons why to donate (via check or PayPal) to our
effort NOW: *
1) Saves an incredibly historic site
2) Honors WWII Signal Corps and Honor Front veterans
3) Helps education by inspiring kids to learn science
4) Furthers the development of a NJ Shore tourist destination.
5) Will create full and part-time employment
6) Improves property values in the North Wall and Shark River area.
7) We are the White House recognized stewards of the Camp Evans Historic
District and now it is under our protection for future generations

**No Passion = No Progress. We have passion and we are progressing -
even if it is tough sometimes.**
If we do not tell kids what great things others have done to improve our
nation how can we expect them to know what they are capable of.

Thank you,
Fred
